Spring Awakening

It all started with a lightning strike. That is how the summer 2017 Kenow wildfire in Southeastern British Columbia started. The Kenow fire had shown no signs of moving east up the Akamina Valley and risking Waterton Lakes National Park but that all changed quickly. In just a few days, the fire moved into the park and destroyed over 38,100 hectares.

The blacked burnt bark on most of the trees in the park has fallen off, leaving white sentinels as far as the eye can see. But there are sure signs of the forest’s slow recovery. The undergrow is springing to life and the wildflowers are blooming.

This image was captured on photographic medium-format film (MFF) using a dedicated panoramic film camera with a negative size of 6 x 17 cm (2.32 x 6.69 inches) that is part of my Intentional Camera Movement on Medium-Format Film (ICMMFF) project.
